A question often asked is "Are corks better for ageing wine than screw tops"?
Well, they are certainly becoming the norm in Australia. Daniela Gordon of Flametree commented "The Trade has been the catalyst in driving this change from cork to screw cap in our market.
Consumers have been very accepting of this change in our market, to the point where it is no longer a barrier.
As far as ageing goes, trials indicate that wines age just as well under screw cap. There is also the added benefit of eliminating taint, sporadic oxidation and there is more consistency between bottles. Trials have also shown that under screw cap wine tends to be fresher, fruitier, structurally firmer, bolder and better able to retain its varietal definition. Primary characters will develop into more complex secondary characters over time, given appropriate cellaring."
There is a very good book available on the subject called “Taming the Screw” by Tyson Stelzer. This is an excellent and insightful read.
